Applying The Montessori Method In The Daily Activities Of The Elderly

Being part of the senior health care profession, it is challenging to create activities that will optimize the experience of the elderly under our care. Here at GCS, great value is placed in not just merely giving the standard care, but ultimately in creating better opportunities for those who trust us with their care. Improving the quality of life is one of our main missions, so we aim to be creative in giving them activities and sessions that will improve their daily life.

During the study of the Montessori Method and the effects that it can have in the area of senior care, we found a very practical and helpful solution; engaging with elders through routine daily tasks and activities.

The Montessori Method makes use of independent learning and development via self-powered activities and practices. We have modified those concepts  into an applicable approach towards elder care. We found that providing an opportunity for our loved ones to take part in menial and repetitive household chores can improve many aspects of the person.

Watering the plants, putting plates on the table, simple sweeping of the floor, and even folding the laundry. These normally mundane tasks hold vital importance when they are done purposefully and systematically with a goal in mind. Physically, they are able to move and exercise. Mentally, they become focused on the work to be done. Emotionally, they gain a sense of fulfillment and importance knowing that they are vital in the upkeep and the maintenance of their environment.

The transformation of these simple activities into enriching experiences for those under our care showed exciting results in their social interaction and physical wellness.

Here at GCS, we do our best to add a relational value to everything we do. Combined with an intentional and educated approach, lives can have much more meaning than before.
