It turns out that there is one thing that we can easily do.
An act of communication, touch therapy tilts a person’s response away from stress and anxious thoughts.
In a recent study conducted at St. Catherine University, “Therapeutic touch is a non-pharmacologic intervention that has been utilized for the treatment of behaviors seen in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. It has been found through research to decrease stress and anxiety, and to improve quality of life and emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.”
“Evidence has shown therapeutic touch does not cause patients any harm. An intensive review of the literature and studies on the use of therapeutic touch as an intervention to treat behavioral symptoms of AD indicates that it is appropriate for primary caregivers to consider therapeutic touch therapy to treat behaviors of patients with AD.”
Our lack of time for our grandparents can lead to touch deprivation. Thus, the need for professional caregivers has become much more necessary these days.
With someone focused on the needs of your elderly family users, you can rest assured that they won’t suffer from lack of touch. The presence of physical touch in elderlies, especially the ones who are suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, is essential in lessening stress and anxiety.
No matter our age, physical touch will always be necessary in sustaining good moods and increasing pain tolerance.
