The Silent Language of Love: Supporting a Loved One with Dementia

By Anne Joy Reyes

When Memories Fade, Love Remains

There was a time when I knew her so well. The way she hummed her favorite song while stirring a pot of soup, the sparkle in her eyes when she told stories of her youth, and the way she wrapped her arms around me in a hug that felt like home. She was my mother, my grandmother, my best friend. And now, she is somebody I used to know.

Dementia has a way of stealing the familiar, unraveling the threads of memory that once held our loved ones close. It starts small—misplaced keys, forgotten names, moments of confusion. But slowly, it takes more. It erases the details that make up a life, leaving behind fragments of the person we once knew.

But even in the forgetting, there is still so much love.

Though she may not always remember my name, she still smiles when I hold her hand. Though she may not recall the stories she once told, she still laughs when I tell a joke. Though she may not know who I am, I will always know who she is. And that is enough.

Dementia does not take away the essence of a person. It may change how we connect, but it cannot erase the love, the warmth, and the history we share. It reminds us to cherish the small moments—the touch of a hand, the sound of a familiar melody, the unspoken understanding that lingers even when words fade away.

Navigating the Journey of Dementia Care

Caring for a loved one with dementia is not easy. It is a journey filled with heartache, patience, and a kind of love that asks us to give without expecting anything in return. The days can feel long and overwhelming, with emotions swinging between frustration, grief, and hope.

But in the quiet moments—when recognition flickers for just a second, when a familiar smile reappears, when a song sparks a joyful hum—we are reminded that they are still here. Maybe not as they once were, but as they are now.

It’s important to focus on the present, on what brings comfort and joy in the moment. Creating a calm environment, engaging in simple activities like folding towels, listening to music, or looking through old photographs can make a world of difference. Even when words fail, the power of touch, a kind voice, or a reassuring presence can offer connection.

You Are Not Alone

For those walking this path, know this: you are not alone. Dementia affects not only the person diagnosed but also the caregivers and families who love them. Seeking support from others who understand—through caregiver support groups, counseling, or simply leaning on friends and family—can make the journey less isolating.

While dementia may take away memories, it cannot take away the love we carry in our hearts. And in our remembering, in our care, in our patience and presence, our loved ones continue to live on.

Because love, even in the face of forgetting, never fades.
