To Every Caregiver Daughter and Son: Today, We See You

By R R

This one isn't a how-to.

It isn't a guide. It isn't a list of activities. It isn't a tip sheet.

Today, on Mother's Day, this is a letter — to every caregiver daughter and son who's reading this.

To You

We know what today might look like for you.

You may have woken up early, like every morning, to check on her before anything else. You may have already managed medications, breakfast, and a bathroom trip before most people have had their first cup of coffee. You may have a plan for the day — or you may have given up on plans because you've learned that they rarely survive contact with reality.

Maybe she remembered it was Mother's Day. Maybe she didn't.

Maybe she said something that hurt. Maybe she said something that healed.

Maybe you cried in the kitchen this morning, alone, before going in to greet her with a smile. Maybe you'll cry later, after she's asleep.

We see you.

Today, You Are Both

Here is something most people don't know about being a caregiver-daughter or a caregiver-son: today, you are both child and parent.

You are still her child. You came from her. She raised you, loved you, fed you, worried about you, hoped for you. That doesn't change because she's the one being cared for now.

And today, you are also, in a way, mothering her. Tending. Watching. Anticipating needs. Soothing fears. Doing the small invisible work that mothers have always done — the work that nobody sees and nobody fully thanks them for.

So Mother's Day is, in its quiet way, partly yours too.

What You're Doing Matters

We know it doesn't always feel like it matters.

Some days you go to bed thinking you didn't do enough. Some days you wonder if any of this is making a difference. Some days you compare yourself to siblings who aren't here, or to the version of yourself you were before all this started, and the comparison breaks your heart.

But here is what's true:

Every meal you've prepared for her has fed her body and reminded her she's loved.

Every medication you've sorted has bought her time, comfort, and dignity.

Every coloring page or photo book or quiet afternoon you've spent beside her has been a moment of connection — and connection is the most powerful medicine in dementia care.

Every time you've chosen patience over frustration, presence over distraction, kindness over correction, you've given her something she could not give herself.

These are not small things. They are the things.

A Message to the Mom Who Made You

If she's still able to receive your words today, tell her you love her. Tell her she did a good job raising you. Tell her you wouldn't be the person you are without her.

If she's not able to receive those words anymore — if the disease has taken that bridge — say them anyway. Out loud. To her, near her, beside her. The words land somewhere, even when we can't see where.

And then, when you've said your piece to her, take a moment to say something to yourself.

Thank you for showing up.

Thank you for being here.

Thank you for becoming the kind of person who could do this.

Because that, too, is something your mother helped create — even if she doesn't know it today.

From All of Us

To every daughter who's gotten up before sunrise to start another caregiving day.

To every son who's quietly rearranged his life to be present for hers.

To every adult child who's sat through repeated questions, late-night fears, and lost moments without losing their love.

To every caregiver who feels invisible today.

We see you.

This Mother's Day, we honor your mom — and we honor you.

You are doing sacred work. The kind that doesn't show up on resumes, doesn't get celebrated in public, doesn't always get thanked even at home.

But it matters. It matters more than almost anything else you'll ever do.

Happy Mother's Day, caregiver. From all of us at CarePrints — thank you.
