Here are some red flags to watch out for to see if your elder family users may be in need of in-home care soon.
1) Frequent forgetfulness
This is one of the most common signs of an impending cognitive impairment, particularly for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. You may notice that, while they look fit and healthy, they start forgetting very important dates and occasions (birthdays or holidays), a regular scheduled appointment, or even having difficulty reusering how to put on a shirt or a dress. Eventually, this may lead to a feeling of embarrassment or frustration, which will only make things worse if left unattended.
2) Declining personal hygiene
Any deterioration in the way your loved ones look or cleanliness, most specially a situation that falls way below their normal behavior, is a clear sign that they might need valuable in-home support soon. Soiled pants, untidy hair, dirty shirts that have stayed on them for long period, or body odor are just some of the things that tell you something is starting to go amiss.
3) Difficulty moving around
If your elder family user is starting to feel weak, suffering from slight falls due to imbalance, and declining eyesight, their safety and well-being will be greatly compromised. If he or she needs to be assisted every time they want to move from point A to point B, then you should start looking for in-home care options right away.
4) Confusion and temperament
Elder individuals who are often forgetting directions, especially those who were used to be very sharp with it, may often display irregular moments of frustration or anger. This is an early sign that either dementia or Alzheimer’s disease is starting to manifest within their system.
5) Sudden weight loss or gain
This may tell you that they may start forgetting to eat, or they may not be eating at all because they feel something and wouldn’t want you to get bothered. They might be unconsciously skipping meals or are eating way too much to find comfort. Either way, it’s a clear sign that contacting an in-home care specialist must be scheduled asap.
