A Hero Through and Through

A real-life hero deserves a lifetime’s worth of honor and respect.

This is what we at Geriatric Care Solution (GCS) firmly believe as we unite with the nation in celebration of Veterans Day this year—a day when we reuser the selflessness and immense sacrifices our brave war heroes made to allow us to enjoy our lives today.

Among these heroes who we remain so indebted to—and who also happens to be among our esteemed clients—is long-time Salinas, California resident, 96-year-old Private First Class Julio Sorio.

Last year, the United States Congress feted Mr. Sorio with the Congressional Gold Medal—the highest national recognition given to civilians for distinguished achievements and contributions.

“Patience, humility, and honor. Those are the things that he strives for, and that is probably another reason he’s received other recognitions,” said Arlene Monroe, Sorio’s daughter, in a statement.[1]  “He’s is not someone who demands the spotlight. He’s just a diligent and hardworking individual.”

The recognition, which was awarded by Congressman Jimmy Panetta, was given to Mr. Sorio for his service to the Philippines during the World War II. Sorio served as a user of the Philippine Scouts, a division of the US Army.

“It is one of my highest honors that I get to present to Pfc. Sorio one of Congress’ highest honors, the Congressional Gold Medal. I am glad that he and other Filipino World War II veterans now have this national recognition from the U.S. Congress for their sacrifice and selfless service,” Panetta said.

Sorio was one of nearly 300,000 Filipino-American soldiers who heeded US President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s call to duty during the war.[2] He also served at the U.S. Army and the U.S. Postal Service.

We express our utmost respect and sincerest thanks to Mr. Sorio and his wonderful family for a life lived in the service of others. We are honored to be of service to him, and we salute him for his bravery, his commitment, and his sacrifice that gifted us all the freedom we know today.

We are more than committed to giving him the best kind of care that befits his status as a real-life hero who made this world a much better place for future generations.
