There are lots of ways to keep senior family users living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease enjoying a sense of purpose and fulfillment. One of these is through “art therapy,” one of the fundamental approaches under the Montessori Method for dementia care.
We’ve touched on the Montessori approach to dementia care in this blog recently (see: Memory Care: Philosophy of Montessori and why it matters). It’s basically founded on the idea of creating a nurturing environment that is “adapted to support memory loss and sensory impairment and facilitate independence” through engaging and stimulating activities.
Here are five ways art therapy impacts the wellbeing of your senior loved ones with dementia positively:
1) Art helps stimulate the brain
Experts say that engaging in creative activities have a significant positive impact on improving cognitive development. It can still long-forgotten positive memories and even encourages seniors with dementia to connect better with others.
2) It allows people to express themselves.
Seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease often find it hard to express their feelings and connect with others verbally. Art provides them a respite by allowing them to put their emotions on display, whether it’s through writing, sketching, or coloring.
3) It puts people in a positive mood
Engaging in fun and creative art activity allows seniors with dementia to let out repressed negative emotions.
It also gives them a welcome distraction from their depressed mental state, whichis often associated with feelings of frustration and confusion because of their condition.
4) It helps create happy memories.
Art activities offer fun ways that help seniors enjoy good moments, good hours, and good days, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.
5) It helps them connect with the world around them.
One of the most important things art therapy brings to seniors with dementia is to allow them to enjoy shared experiences with other people, whether it’s with their families or friends.
This list can go on and on, but only one thing is certain when it comes to art therapy for seniors with dementia: it brings with it a huge amount of positive impact to one’s physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
