So, how can you make sure that your loved ones remain healthy through dementia care as we get through this challenging time?
1. Make sure that you post written notes and reminders about hygienic practices including washing their hands with soap and using alcohol if washing with soap is not practical. If it is possible, let them watch a demonstration of a handwashing video.
2. In general, you and your loved ones should avoid getting in close contact with people.
3. If possible, do not let even friends visit your home.
4. If you are caring for a person with a regular doctor’s appointment, seek alternatives including teleconsultation appointment.
5. Disinfect frequently high touch points in your home.
6. It will also be a big help to your loved ones if you will stick to their routine pre-pandemic. This can establish comfort.
7. Since touching is no longer advised, you have to look for another way on how to show them that you’re present. There are various digital platforms that you can utilize. Virtual communication can be your ally here.
8. Censor the amount of news that you will relay. Do not overwhelm them with information.
9. Help them experience and reuser positive emotions by reminiscing about past events and activities that they once loved.
10. Smile. Reuser that this one is contagious, too.
